Shawn Barber came out as Gay and proud

. The Canadian Olympic pole vaulter and world champion Shawn Barber came out publicly as gay earlier today. He took to Facebook :

'Gay and proud! Thank you to my parents for being such a great support. I continue to grow as a person and have a great support group. My parents are my greatest support and have helped me through a lot recently. To my friends, you are always my friends and i love you too!'

Shawnacy Campbell 'Shawn" Barber (22) is a Canadian track and field athlete specialising in the pole vault. He has won many victories in sports including the current reigning world champion in pole vault having won the event with a height of 5.90 m at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics in Beijing.

His outdoor personal best jump of 5.93 metres was made on July 25, 2015, it is the current national record. He also holds the NCAA Collegiate Indoor Record at 5.91m.

At the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Barber placed tenth in wet and windy conditions. He cleared 5.50 metres before missing on all three attempts at 5.65.[16]

After the Games, it has been announced that Barber had tested positive for cocaine prior to the Games.Just a few days before the Games he was released because he had not consciously used cocaine. The cocaine had come into contact with sexual intercourse.

The reaction from his friends and followers on Facebook has been very supportive.
